What is the difference between the image search results when a person types “Sexy White Mom” into google and then types “Sexy Black Mom”? Then changes Mom for Mum(how we spell Mother in Britain). Many people have found the initial results upsetting and disgusting. Question is what can we or they do to change the results?
It seems every few months or so someone types a random race related phrase into google to see what results the Google Image provides. Early this year we had the ‘Three Black Teenagers Vs Three White Teenagers’ google search. Now we have ‘sexy Black Mom vs Sexy White Mom’. Both sets of search produce unsavory results for the ‘Black’ results.
Here is me once again conducting the search for you and explaining the results
My friend also made this point which I did not mention:
The word “white” isn’t used as a pornographic category whereas “black” or “ebony” is. Type in “sexy blonde moms” and the results are similar.
Also, the default porn position is both white and American and therefore type in “sexy British moms” and again, similar results to “sexy black moms”. Darren Griffiths
His point pretty much sums up porn and society. ‘White’ is ubiquitous in our society. Therefore it does not need a sub-category when it is the majority. ie why there is no ‘White history Month’.
Having previously explained that the negative images of ‘three Black teenagers’ is merely a reflection of society and the media- not google’s secret plot to make black teenagers look bad. It would seem the same answer could be given for the pornographic images that are produced when you search ‘sexy Black mom’. However, porn is different to actual news stories. Google does often censor porn in its search results. So the questions is- Do people want Google to start censoring results or should we choose the same options we needed to use against ‘three black teenagers’? The option of creating more positive images to replace the search results of the negative.
Last time said this and the point remains the same:
- Start a campaign pushing google to change the order of the search results. However, what really would be the point of this? How many people actually regularly type “Sexy Black mom” into Google? Barely anyone(who isn’t looking for porn)! Moreover, it wouldn’t mean the porn images would disappear. They would simply be replaced with the same fake/model images that appear for “Sexy White Mom”.
- Instead start sharing, searching and making more positive stories about black teenagers. Ie if there were more pictures of Black Moms in positive news stories/website posts they would be higher up in the search results. This is the best and my preferred strategy of working towards changing the perception of Black Moms, teenagers and people.
We all know there are plenty of Black Moms doing positive things every single day. But are you sharing or promoting their stories? Or do you get distracted by the negative or by pointless discussions?
Each person must look at how they contribute to the perception of Black people and youth culture. Are you following/liking pages like MediaTakeOut or WorldStarHipHop? These sites only perpetuate the stereotypes and negative stories of Black people by constantly sharing fight videos and other ignorant behaviour and content.
If you or people you know prolifically share negative videos you are part of the problem and worse than the results of these google searches.
Point being, everyone must take personal responsibility for the part they play in the perception of themselves and their community. If you want a positive perception then start sharing and doing positive things. If you are already doing so; then start inspiring others to follow your example. But, also remember that your validation for whom you are, your worth, your people and your destiny should never come or be sculpted by what the media says about you.
Those are the bigger issues than a random search term barely anyone will every type.
In short, no google is not racist or purposely potraying an image of Black women as sexual objects. FYI if you google “Black Mum” the search results are just the same as ‘White Mom/Mum’. Just as if you google ‘Sexy Black mum’ instead of ‘Sexy Black mom’ you get completely different results. You can google Sexy Asian mom, Sexy India Mom and Sexy Blonde Mom and the results will be sexualised as well. Google is only a reflection of society and internet usage.
With that said, remember the media, social media and people influence search results both negatively and positively. If you want change; you must be the change you want to see. Here are some positive posts to read and share:
With that said, let us know your thoughts.
Do you think our analysis of this issue was valid or invalid?
Do you think google should purposely change the results?
