It has been rumored that Jay-z was planning to perform during the half-time show of Superbowl 2018 alongside Justin Timberlake. However, The Source and The Sun newspaper are now stating Jay has turned down the offer to perform. Is this a show of support for Colin Kaepernick or is Jay letting Superbowl fans know the ramifications from previously protesting his wife, Beyonce’s Superbowl performance?
If Jay-z had agreed to perform during the Super Bowl halftime show, he would have been following in the footsteps of Missy Elliot, Janet JacksonINSER and his wife Beyoncé. However, Jay-z is at the stage of his career and life where he is neither desperate for money or exposure. Jay-z can now choose to put his morals and ethical principles over his bank balance?
Jay-z’s decision could be a reflection of the tone of his latest album and his recent show of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick. For instance, whilst performing at the Meadows Festival, Jay-Z chose to dedicate a song to Colin Kaepernick. It would be a weak show of solidarity if Jay was then to agree to perform during the Superbowl.
Many people have speculated that the reason Colin Kaepernick has not been signed by an NFL team is due to his protest during the National anthem. This involved Kaepernick taking a knee during the anthem. Kaepernick said:
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Moreover, Jay-Z’s motivation came from closer to home. His wife, Beyonce gave one of the most iconic Superbowl performances of all time. However, her homage to the Black Panther’s led to some people to call for protests of her concerts and media outlets like TheBlaze and Tomi Lahren attacked Beyoncé. This may have been a factor in Jay’s decision-making.
Maybe, it is not a question of either or. Jay-z’s decision to say no could be the combination of Kaepernick’s treatment and the backlash Beyoncé received after her homage to Black history and icons.
Whatever the motivation, it is still refreshing to see that Colin Kaepernick is not standing alone in his protest or the treatment he has received since taking a knee during the American National Anthem.
Do you agree with Jay-z decision? Are you boycotting the NFL?
